PIECE OF THE MONTH VI – BELT OF SAINT JOANA

Collection: Museum of Aveiro (inv. no. 2/D)

Dates: 1472-1490

Provenance: Convent of Jesus of Aveiro

Local of Production: Unknown

Dimensions: 98cm in length × 3cm in width

Weight: Unknown

Materials: Leather, silver

Description: Along with a tunic (which I previously presented here) and fragments of a scapular, this belt (cinta or correia, as it would’ve been called at the time) is part of the so-called relics of Princess Saint Joana. Like the tunic, the belt is also incomplete, missing one of its ends and its corresponding buckle.

Cinto Princesa Joana
Detail of the belt’s silver mounts.

What remains of the belt consists of a dark brown leather strip, 3cm wide, with five silver rosettes with holes in the middle, to accommodate the buckle’s spike would pass, and an additional rosette in lieu of a strapend – perhaps a reused rosette?

Cinto 2
Saint Joana’s belt, general perspective.

It is unfortunate that the belt’s missing section is usually the most interesting part of any belt, and a good source for determining regional decorative trends. Given the relative simplicity of the rest of the belt, it is reasonable to assume that missing buckle was a simple affair, with perhaps a small buckle plate riveted to the leather. But we can only speculate. Nevertheless, this belt remains an important source for the study of fashion accessories in Portugal, and a good source for reenactors to work with.
